30-year-old entrepreneur turns shrimps into big business

KOTA KINABALU: A 30-year-old woman's venture into a “male domain” is raking in the profits.
Janariah Kurus from Kampung Tanah Merah of Sabah's east coast Tawau started a shrimp-rearing project about a year ago on a small scale, after trying her hand at rearing freshwater fish in 2003.

The business has flourished with five shrimp ponds that can produce up to 1.5 tonnes of shrimp per harvest.
“They say this is a man's business but I have proved this wrong by doing quite well. As it is, there can only be three harvests a year as shrimps need 90 days to grow,'' she added.

Janariah, who manages Kuralas Shrimp Industries the name is a combination of her family name Kurus and Alas said she started her shrimp project with the as-sistance of Fama, Ko-Nelayan, a RM30,000 loan from Tekun Nasional and with some savings.

She said her interest in aquaculture made her venture into shrimp-farming.
Janariah said she now planned to introduce a homestay programme for tourists “so they can enjoy eating shrimps”.

Tanjung Batu assemblywoman Datuk Hamisa Samat said she was confident that Janariah would do well in the business.

“We are pleased that she was able to turn an idle plot into a useful business venture,'' she said after visiting the project site.
