Maxis believes in untapped potential of SME segment

MAXIS Bhd believes there is good growth potential in offering end-to-end business solutions to the small and medium enterprises (SME) market as the segment is still fairly untapped. "Competition among businesses is increasing everyday. Companies need to realise that in order to compete better in the market space, they need to be an adopter of technologies or IT solutions," said Maxis head of business services Fitri Abdullah.

Maxis, the biggest mobile operator in the country, is also the market leader in mobile services for the SME market.

However, to grow its business in the SME segment, the company will need to offer more than just mobile voice services to its business users.

This is why the company launched its Built for SME Solutions - Logistics and Transportations, yesterday.

The launch came about half a year after it launched Built for SME Solutions - Retail, in April.

It was Maxis' first attempt to launch business solutions catered to a specific industry within the SME segment.

The launch in April was successful, as it managed to double the take-up rate of the products offered, said the company.

It is expecting a similar take-up with its new solutions.

Despite the encouraging take-up rate, Fitri believes it is not time to celebrate as the take-up rate of IT business solutions or IT solutions that help companies to be more efficient remains small.

"The thing with the SME industry is that you need more success stories on how business solutions and technologies have significantly improved their businesses. There is a need to increase the awareness level in this area. We know it takes time," he said.

Currently, about 32 per cent of Malaysia's gross domestic product (GDP) is contributed by the SME sector. By 2020, contribution by SME sector to the country's GDP is expected to grow to 40 per cent.

"We want a piece of that growth, that's what we are going after," said Fitri.

The newly-launched Built for SME Solutions - Logistics and Transportations is a bundled solution that comprises a host of services beyond fixed and mobile solutions. This includes Maxis Managed Machine-to-Machine (M2M), Logistics and Warehouse Management System via Maxis Clous and Maxis Fixed Line Saver with Unity Hotline.

It partners software vendors Maytrack Sdn Bhd for the Maxis Managed M2M solutions and ProdigyNet Solutions Sdn Bhd for the Logistics and Warehouse Management System.

With these solutions, logistic and transportation companies will be able to manage their warehouses, or even their fleet of delivery vehicles more efficiently.

For example, if the company driver is speeding or conducts off-hour operations, a notification message will be sent to the company owner.
