Gaining entrepreneurial wisdom

ON YOUR OWN
By TAN THIAM HOCK

IN the recent Chief Marketing Officer to Boardroom conference, I was asked whether marketing skills is a prerequisite for a successful entrepreneur.

Caught off guard, I mumbled some feeble answer, which did not seem to convince that smart alec. If only I had my wits with me that day, I would have asked him: “Do great marketeers make good entrepreneurs?”

I guess very highly successful entrepreneurs possess natural talents and all round skills. To me, talent is inborn and is reflected through each person's personality.

Natural leadership, likable personality, humility and being quick with numbers are certainly qualities that are endearing and nice to have. But will these qualities ensure success? Do nice guys really finish last?

Secret weapon
Very successful high profile entrepreneurs tend to have a ruthless streak framed around a very confident personality and have the gift of the gab. Think Donald Trump straight talking, unforgiving and totally domineering. Oppose him and you are fired! Maybe there are Malaysian “Trumps” in our midst. Can you identify them?

There are also highly successful tough Malaysian entrepreneurs but in true Asian culture, they hire ruthless henchmen to run their organisation while they stay in the background strategising. Can you identify them? No names from me lest I am prepared to face a RM100mil defamation lawsuit!

Thinking out of the box, I would like you to believe that politicians do make good entrepreneurs. They have an inborn talent of being totally aware of their surroundings, instantly compartmentalising internal and external forces into a SWOT analysis. Acknowledging their own strengths and weaknesses, they are able to size up threats and look for instant opportunities. And they hire ruthless henchmen too, to help them run a tight ship. Can you identify them?

The cash theory
Successful politicians are great strategists, charismatic leaders and possess an even slicker gift of the gab. They are also a natural when it comes to understanding numbers.

Small time politicians, small brain, small numbers but for big time politicians, the world is their oyster.
If you look closely enough, the bulge in their pocket actually contains a 15-digit computer calculator. How else do you think they can manage RM3bil cash in multiple bank accounts? From memory? No, that has been conveniently erased.

In another lecture on entrepreneurial wisdom, the first slide by Prof William Salman from HBS that flashed on the screen was four sentences on finance and what he learned after more than 30 years of teaching entrepreneurial finance and being consultant to more than 100 companies:

More cash is preferred to less cash
Cash sooner is preferred to cash later
Less risky cash is preferred to more risky cash
Don't run out of cash

In the current US presidential election campaign, President Barack Obama is raising concern that his opponent, Republican Mitt Romney, has raised substantially more election funds than his campaign has.

Obviously, in an intense campaign of this nature, more cash is preferred to less cash strategic advantage due to more firepower. Cash sooner is preferred to cash later demoralising the opposing team. Less risky cash is preferred to more risky cash Obama's advantage as he has to give less trade offs to the contributors who are legally lobbying for favours. Don't run out of cash advantage to Romney as

Obama will have to go into borrowings to match Romney's firepower, just like Bill Clinton who on his retirement had to hit the lecture circuit and publish memoirs just to pay off his borrowings.
So are politicians good entrepreneurs? I rest my case.

Yearn to learn
Not all entrepreneurs are gifted with all-round inborn talents. But there are certain qualities which are prerequisites if you want to be successful. You must have a burning desire to achieve.

You must be pragmatic and realistic in your personal SWOT analysis. Hopefully, you are slightly cleverer than your competitors.

Advantage to you if you are naturally good with numbers and you are able to exude a confident personality and strong leadership.

Most important of all, you must be willing to learn.

Running a business is a life long education journey. You can acquire the necessary skills like finance, marketing, law etc in the course of your work or attend courses and seminars. If you have a keen eye, learning from other people's mistakes will save you a lot of pain in your future endeavors.

Nowadays, you can hire a coach to guide you, image consultants to spruce you up and a psychiatrist to build your confidence. Add a good speech therapist and you now have the potential to become a successful businessman or a slick politician. The world is indeed your oyster.

It is encouraging to note that entrepreneurship as a subject is now part of tertiary education syllabus.
With the support of the enthusiastic Dr Vicki Little, the Entrepreneur Club in our local Monash University is buzzing and in high spirits.

35 years ago, we had careers clubs and interact clubs in our secondary schools because students then were clueless, naive and shy. Perhaps Dr Little can help set up a chain of entrepreneur clubs in our secondary schools across the nation. This could be the start of a sustainable ecosystem for entrepreneurship in Malaysia.

Lastly, to answer the smart alec, I do agree with him that it is definitely an advantage if the entrepreneur has good marketing skills. After all, the ultimate aim of any business is to sell products or services to customers.

Do spare a thought though for politicians, as they have the unenviable task of selling hope which requires a higher level of cash and imagination. Like entrepreneurs, they too invest for their future.

Ideas are never weird, just different

SO what will entrepreneur Derek Sivers speak on when he takes to the stage at TEDxKL next month? It is almost impossible to tell just by examining the videos of his past TEDTalks.

There are three such videos, each under three minutes long. These are entertaining and often witty lessons on disparate topics.

For example, at a TED event in Mysore, India, in November 2009, Sivers got the audience to think about how there is a flipside to everything.

It is all about perspective and keeping an open mind. What is weird practice to a person may be nothing more than a different way of looking at something.

“Let's never forget that whatever brilliant ideas you have or hear, that the opposite may also be true,” he urged.

In Long Beach, California, a few months later, Sivers cleverly used a video of young people dancing with abandon at an outdoor festival, to illustrate his points on how to start a movement.
His advice: “If you really care about starting a movement, have the courage to follow and show others how to follow. And when you find a lone nut doing something great, have the guts to be the first one to stand up and join in.”

The third video was taken at Oxford, England, in July 2010. In it, Sivers argued that a person had a better chance of achieving his goals if he kept them to himself instead of revealing them to others.
Clearly, Sivers is not sticking to an agenda. And he rejects any notion that he will be at TEDxKL as an entrepreneur with a key message to deliver.

“Oh, I've got no message at all. When I'm speaking at a TED event, I'm not an entrepreneur. I'm just a fellow student, sharing something I've learned about life,” he told StarBizWeek via email.

Sivers: ‘My main goal is to present something that challenges your existing beliefs, that makes you look at the world in a new way.’

Not that he is not qualified to offer insights into entrepreneurship. In 1998, he founded CD Baby, which became the largest seller of independent music online. A decade later, he sold the company for US$22mil and gave the proceeds to a charitable trust for music education.

He has since set up Now Now Now, a “holding company for open and honest services that help musicians”. Among the services he plans to roll out are MuckWork (it will have a network of people doing non-creative, mundane work for musicians) and SongTest (a free, open song contest).
“This isn't work, it's play,” he wrote on his website.

Even the TEDxKL theme of Interdependence is no indicator of what Sivers will present at the conference. He says: “No offence to the organisers, but I never pay much attention to the themes. To me, it's all about the attendees. That's the real reason to go to TED. Otherwise you could just watch the talks at home at your leisure.”

However, he is willing to let on this much about his talk in Kuala Lumpur expect to be surprised with something new.

“People come to TED to learn. If I don't surprise you, then everything I've said is aligned with what you already believe. My main goal is to present something that challenges your existing beliefs, that makes you look at the world in a new way,” he explains.

It helps that Sivers is an experienced performer. He was the ringleader/MC of a circus for 10 years, and is also a full-time musician. He has done over 1,000 shows as the main performer.

“The biggest lesson learned is that it's not about you, the performer. It's 100% all about the audience. For TED, it's about presenting a new and surprising idea for the audience. It doesn't matter who I am, what I've done, or anything else. All that matters is the idea.

“So it's my job to present it in the most memorable way I can so people can remember it long enough to talk about with their friends tomorrow,” he says.

An American born in California, Sivers now lives in Singapore with his wife. “There's so much going on in Asia, so exciting, so much to learn. I really wanted a home base in the middle of it all. And so we found Singapore,” he wrote on his website.

His fascination with Malaysia is a big reason for agreeing to be a TEDxKL presenter. He explains to StarBizWeek: “I want to understand it (Malaysia) more. I'd like to spend much more time here, but for now, TEDxKL can be a little sample of the best and the brightest a taste of the culture.”
Of course, being part of the TED experience is a factor as well. “You're surrounded by smart and successful people. It's inspiring to try to live up to that. It makes you look at your work or life from their perspective,” he says.

Now in its fourth year, TEDxKL is an independently organised event under the TED banner. TED describes itself as a non-profit organisation “devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading”. It started in 1984 as a conference on technology, entertainment and design (TED), but the scope has been expanded to also include science, business, the arts and global issues.

TEDxKL (www.tedxkl.com) will be held on July 14 at the Temple of Fine Arts in Brickfields, Kuala Lumpur. The Star is an official media partner of the event.

Among the other presenters at TEDxKL are entrepreneur Myshkin Ingawale, nanotechnology expert Dr Ille Gebershuber, writer-actor-director Jo Kukathas, photographer Zann Huang, sun bear conservationist Wong Siew Te, Sinar Project co-founder Khairil Yusof and comedian Kavin Jayaram.

Ikhlas mahu jawatankuasa khas tangani isu peniaga asing

- Bernama

PKS disyor rebut peluang e-dagang

- Bernama

Platform to help SMEs penetrate European e-commerce sector

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian small and medium enterprises (SMEs) can soon penetrate the European e-commerce sector through an integrated platform provided by e-commerce and payment solutions provider Multimedia Prospect Sdn Bhd and Belgium national post service Bpost International.

Bpost managing director Luc De Munck said Europe had emerged as the largest e-commerce market in the world despite the eurozone crisis.

“People are getting more cost-conscious and are more (online) savvy. They shop online and don't limit to just buying within the European countries,” he told reporters after signing an agreement with Multimedia Prospect Sdn Bhd.

“Bpost sees a year-on-year rise of at least 30% in its parcels postage as compared with last year,” he said, adding that some customers were turned off by the additional hidden costs of postage but through logistic solutions provided by Bpost, sellers were able to gain recurring sales from customers due to the enhanced buying experience.

“In Bpost, we have found the right logistics partner that has the tools and experience to boost Malaysian e-commerce activities globally, especially selling into the eurozone.

“This tie-up enables buyers to know the exact amount of postage that they are paying for with much transparency,” ManagePay Systems Bhd managing director Chew Chee Seng said.

He also said that SMEs had to be cultivated that selling online was an additional channel to increase their revenue.

“We have hand-picked 30 companies from about more than 3000 companies in Malaysia Digital Enterprise Exchange (MDEX) portal to sell in the European Union.

“The 30 companies are chosen because they are trusted brands that provide good quality products. We are very selective of the companies as we do not want to tarnish the image of the (MDEX) portal,” he said.

The signing ceremony was witnessed by Belgium ambassador to Malaysia Marc Muellie and SME Corp Malaysia chief executive officer Datuk Hafsah Hashim.

Among some of the goods sold by the 30 companies include items that can be posted like packed food and beverage, spices, apparels, decorative products, kitchenware, utensils, batik and songket.
“By September or October, we hope that there are at least five companies who come on board and sell,” Chew said.

The company also hopes to set up 40 service hubs across the whole of Malaysia in three years.
The technical integration provided by both companies is expected to be completed by end-August which will see faster deliveries and lower returns of postage sent to the eurozone.

The inking ceremony was witnessed by Belgium ambassador to Malaysia Marc Muellie and SME Corp Malaysia chief executive officer Datuk Hafsah Hashim.

Go into e-commerce, SMEs urged

Source From (The Sun Daily): http://www.thesundaily.my/news/415997

Published: on 26 Jun 2012

KUALA LUMPUR (June 25, 2012): SME Corp Malaysia has urged small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to venture into e-commerce, saying the electronic market place has greater outreach and affluence than traditional markets.

CEO Datuk Hafsah Hashim said the e-marketplace has enabled firms to reach out to more potential customers, resulting in an increase in the number of competitors, in addition to the breaking down of geographical barriers.

"One of the advantages of e-commerce is that smaller companies are able to compete with larger firms in terms of quality and accessibility," she said at the signing of an agreement between Multimedia Prospect Sdn Bhd, a wholly-owned subsidiary of ManagePay System Bhd, and Bpost International here today.

The agreement aims to accelerate adoption of e-commerce in Malaysia with the International Trade Lane service.

Hafsah said a recent Google-commissioned study revealed that the Internet contributed 4.1% of gross domestic product in Malaysia, higher than in the US (3.8%) and China (2.6%).

"However, the study also found that Internet accessibility is still relatively low for Malaysian SMEs due to high bandwidth and domain registration costs," she added.

A study by MDeC also revealed that SMEs' adoption of online payment is still at an early stage, she said.

"Only 11% of the respondents used online payment facilities, with online banking being the most popular option, followed by credit card payment," she said adding the high costs and lack of facilities and skills were the main

perceived barriers for SMEs to conduct business online.

Meanwhile, ManagePay CEO Chew Chee Seng said the agreement paves the way for ManagePay to leverage on the expertise and infrastructure of Bpost International to deliver cross-border parcels from e-retailers in Malaysia to destinations in Europe on time, intact and cost efficiently.

"In particular, Bpost International will offer its Globify international trade lane service whereby consumers who purchase goods on the websites of e-retailers will know exactly the total landed cost at the time of purchase," he added.

Chew said this partnership can also benefit Malaysian e-retailers by making it so much easier and more stress-free to sell their products online. – Bernama

PKS terdedah ancaman bencana

Noah, philanthropist who enriched the lives of many

A LOCAL entrepreneur, who has done well for himself both here and overseas, recently related to me a survey conducted to identify the common traits of Taiwan's three richest personalities.

The survey identified the relative lack of selfishness as a common quality among them.

According to the survey, the least selfish of the three also happens to be the richest man in Taiwan.

The survey result may or may not dislodge the usual attachment of negative stigmas to entrepreneurs, but it gives some food for thought that just maybe, one has to be generous to be really successful.

There are already many instances to dismiss the common notion that entrepreneurs are selfish by nature. A recent famous example is Warren Buffet begging the US Congress to tax him more.

Buffet and fellow super rich, Bill Gates, are known for their generosity and extensive philanthropy work through charitable foundations set up under their name.

In Malaysia, the super rich also do show their generous quality. Berjaya founder Tan Sri Vincent Tan, for example, has pledged to transfer RM600 million worth of shares in two of his companies to the Better Malaysia Foundation, which he set up for charitable causes.

The late Tan Sri Mohamed Noah Omar, a successful entrepreneur in his own right and the grandfather of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, also displayed such philanthropic trait.

Although better known as one of the leading founding figures in Umno and the first Speaker of the Dewan Rakyat (1959-1964), he also made his mark in the corporate world.

Together with Tan Sri Lim Goh Tong, he formed a private company called Genting Highlands Sdn Bhd to develop a highland resort that today is world renowned.

Noah was also a director of MUI (Malayan United Industries ) Group in the 1970s before he was appointed its chairman in 1980.

MUI at the time was involved in retailing, hotels, food and confectionery, financial services, property, travel and tourism.

In the 1980s, Noah became the chairman of highly diversified Supreme Corp Bhd (now part of the Lion Group). Supreme was then involved in property, agro-based activities such as palm oil and financial services such as insurance.

Apart from that, he was also Esso Malaysia Ltd director (1975) and the first chairman of the United Malayan Banking Corp Ltd.

Although frugal by nature, as related by Najib in his speech at a dinner held in honour of his late grandfather at the Putra World Trade Centre, Kuala Lumpur, last week, Noah was generous with his wealth.

The Noah Foundation that he set up has contributed to the well-being of many.

"From there, we and many others received many donations and thanks to the donations, we also had the opportunity to pursue our studies," said Najib, sharing his heartfelt memories of his late grandfather in his speech.

Noah (1898-1991) was one of the leading figures in the country's political history but through his corporate life, he and many other benevolent entrepreneurs showed that business is not just about amassing wealth but also giving back to society.

Fulfilling basic requirements: SME@University

SPEAKING at universities is always an honour, but it is even a bigger delight for me to stand on the podium to educate CEOs and business owners who have never set foot into universities before.

Last week, I made my inaugural visit to Universiti Putra Malaysia, Serdang (UPM), where we had our SME@University programme. This programme, which commenced in 2011, connects SME business owners from all walks of life on varsity grounds, and gives them the opportunity to learn new skills as well as communicate and exchange ideas with other business owners. This SME@University programme started off as a pilot project in UKM with the objective of training SME owners to have the right skill sets in management, leadership, marketing, and communication skills.

Various modules are structured to help prepare entrepreneurs in confronting economic challenges and inculcate these CEOs of SMEs to develope insights on creative marketing, branding, innovative business networking as well as what it takes to become world-class CEOs.

Since the pilot programme at UKM, I'm proud that today SME@University has taken up, with four other universities, namely UPM, UiTM, UIAM and UMK, a proud branding of SME@UPM, SME@UiTM, SME@UIAM and SME@UMK.

I anticipate that in the next three years of implementation, some 300 SMEs will graduate through this programme.

If l can excite you, this programme is not just another mundane training course. This dedicated three-month training is incorporated with some fun elements as most trainers believe that it is in playing that we retain the education. We use the approach of semi-coaching, semi-consulting and the trainers themselves are industry players and field experts.

The programme module covers human resource and asset development, leadership and management, practical training on finance and accounting, innovation, entrepreneurship as well as business networking. To top it off, a sequence of case studies, field learning and specialised courses are also offered - guided by the varsity's leading lecturers. Without wanting to boast, our participants usually long to attend classes every weekend, and look forward to the next! I salute their desire to seek knowledge and their zest to wake up early every weekend for 10 consecutive weeks to attend the classes at the Universities! These are whom I call 'Genuine Entrepreneurs' ... they have the passion, the drive and the determination to stay on course in the quest for success in the business world.

I am the first to admit that it's never an easy task to juggle between studies, managing a family and running a business. Some 'students' came as far as Batu Pahat and Kota Baru to join this programme. Come hell or high water, they slogged every Saturday without fail to fulfil the requirements of this programme. It is also fascinating to see that through programmes such as this, the entrepreneurs from diverse backgrounds have established a close bond with each other regardless of skin colour, faith and religion. It's heartening to learn that relationships are made and business networks are enlarged by huddling everyone in one room for 10 weeks! I am truly touched by the tenacity of the students to complete this programme and if not for their strong will and determination, I would not be standing at the podium to present the closing remarks.

Upon completion of this programme, the 'students' will have a clear understanding on what it takes to be a domestic, regional and global player ... to be World Class CEOs! In fact, these 'graduates' will indeed be ready to take on the global market as they have been equipped with the current trends, customer expectations and latest technologies to cope with the ever-dynamic global business landscape. I hope the programme will inspire them to fine tune and sharpen their business plans, reap bigger profits and be more competitive in the business world.

I truly believe that the ingredients of success in any arena are determination and perseverance. Success in life doesn't come easy. In fact, many say success is 99 per cent hardwork and one per cent luck. Of course, there are many failures and hurdles for one to endure before one can taste the sweetness of success. After all, one has to go through the rain first before one can see the rainbow!

Sometimes, I have an itch to be a student again as I know that education is not age-sensitive. Sydney J. Harris, the late American journalist once said, "The whole purpose of education is to turn mirrors into windows". Are you ready to join me to make the big move of becoming a student again?

Production Of Vinegar From Nipah Palm Can Provide Good Returns For SME Entrepreneurs

KUCHING, June 23 (Bernama) -- Small Medium Enterprise (SME)entrepreneurs, particularly those from the coastal areas of Sarawak, can enhance their income by being involved in the production of vinegar from the juice of the nipah palm.

The Assistant Minister in the Chief Minister's Department (Bumiputera Entrepreneur Development) Datuk Mohd Naroden Majais said today that the vinegar is now a raw material of high value in Europe's pharmaceutical industry.

He said to date, he had observed SMEs in the state only selling the juice from the nipah palm as a drink known as Air Sadap, which had little value.

"But when the juice from the nipah palm is processed into vinegar, its value can reach thousands of ringgit per litre compared to just drinking it," he added.

Mohd Naroden said this while officiating the Entrepreneurs Carnival and Crafts Malaysia Promotion, organised by the Malaysian Handicraft Development Corporation here Saturday.

Legacy or cashing out?

Entrepreneurs need to decide between maintaining control and maximising wealth

Last night, I had a discussion with a mixed bunch of lecturers, students and working professionals on entrepreneurship in our local Monash University. I must have disappointed Dr Vicki Little, the bubbly Kiwi senior lecturer of the Aussie Monash Business School when I told her that I had no slides, notes nor power point presentation. All her previous invited speakers were well prepared with structured Hollywood presentations. This Chinaman's hope of hitting the lecture circuit evaporated at the footsteps of Monash Plenary Hall. (Sigh) Back to being a farmer.

One of Vicki's students is currently doing her PhD thesis on family entrepreneurship, deep diving into three generations and legacy comparisons between different families in Malaysia. Another participant from Diary Farm pointed out to me that his head honcho Taipan in Jardine Matheson Hong Kong is a fifth generation Keswick. Why then, Bill Gates, Warren Buffet and the late Steve Jobs leave no legacy nor business for their next generation?

I believe there is a correlation between the mentality of the founder startup and the year of the startup. Bear with me as I start off my BS*!# thesis by arguing that entrepreneurs from the early 1900s till 1980s have the tendency to be owner control entrepreneurs. Their only source of capital then was their own savings and angel-like/passive investors and eventually a listing in the stock exchange of which, they remain a controlling substantial shareholder. With the world growing rapidly due to industrialisation, they would like to handover a thriving business with great potential to the next generation. Rarely do they consider selling out if their children show positive signs of interest in continuing their legacy.

In the last 20 to 30 years, the rapid industrialisation led to over capacity in manufactured goods and created intense competition in almost all sectors of the economy. Suddenly, the entrepreneurs find the going tough, the future cloudy and they have to compete with more educated, well funded and smarter competition. The accumulation of wealth over the last 50 years created huge pension funds seeking for higher returns. This led to the opportunistic emergence of venture capital, private equity and super fund managers.

Entrepreneurs who seek capital investment from venture capital tend to cede control and become minority partner entrepreneur. Private equity will throw obscene amounts of money at established entrepreneur businesses based on such high valuations that make the entrepreneurs forget that they have children willing to take over their business. After all, business is getting tougher by the year so why bother? The best part is, these fund managers are such great creators of value on paper that they are able to resell the businesses for another obscene amount of profit. My BS thesis conclude with an understanding that, the more successful your business becomes, the more likely you will sell out. As long as they offer you an obscenely enriching experience.

In his book, The Founder's Dilemma, Prof Noam Wasserman, an Associate Professor from Harvard Business School, researched 3,607 startup companies in the US over the last 10 years and interviewed 9,900 founders and co-founders. Even though most of the high potential startups were technology and life sciences, the journey of the founder is similar to other business setups; from pre-founding career decisions to actual founding dilemmas to beyond the founding team to investor dilemmas to founder-CEO succession, to final exit.

Wasserman has cleverly described the wealth versus control dilemma, in a decision-making and consequence table. He has defined the different decisions an entrepreneur makes is based on whether he is an entrepreneur who prefers to maintain control in ownership and management, or if he prefers to maximize wealth, being a minority partner and willing to share control but moving at a faster speed to achieve wealth. For budding entrepreneurs, the first dilemma you will face will be to decide whether you are an entrepreneur who wants to maintain control or you prefer to maximize wealth. Whichever route you take, your decisions along your journey is nicely summarised in the table below. Good luck!
And to those who have been asking me as to when is it a good time to come out on your own, Wasserman's research points to founders starting out after an average working experience of 14 years. Since I have no business to hand down to my children, I will send them this article as a reminder to study hard in the university and get good grades so that they can find a decent job in the bleak future. Or in worst case scenarios, they can work in my vegetable farm. Hopefully, after an expensive tertiary education, they can differentiate between FarmVille on their MacBook Pro and the real farm in our warm sunny Malaysia.

NCIA To Boost Private Sector Participation In Second Phase

Source From (Bernama): http://www.bernama.com/bernama/v6/newsbusiness.php?id=675176

Published: on 23 Jun 2012

By Samantha Tan Chiew Ting

GEORGE TOWN, June 23 (Bernama) -- The Northern Corridor Implementation Authority (NCIA) is entering the second phase of strengthening private sector participation in the regional economy.

The NCIA has three-phased approach in its development-planning framework.

The second phase will be achieved by sustaining an unbroken stream of foreign direct investments (FDIs) into the Northern Corridor Economic Region (NCER), while at the same time, carving out business opportunities for local small and medium-sized enterprises.

Starting next year to 2020, the second phase entails the broadening and deepening of private sector involvement in the economic development of the region.

"This includes the establishment of dynamic business networks via foreign and domestic linkages," said its Chief Executive, Datuk Redza Rafiq.

He said the NCIA was successful in implementing the first phase of the Northern Corridor's development blueprint from 2007 to 2012 by securing anchor investors and building priority infrastructure.

"The NCIA is confident of the continued interest of foreign direct investors in the region because of the complete eco-system in the Northern Corridor, namely the right business culture, the right skills, an efficient and comprehensive logistics network, and excellent facilities.

"At the same time, we want to carve out business opportunities for the local small and medium enterprises arising from the FDIs," Redza told Bernama in an interview today.

Last year, the Northern Corridor attracted investments worth RM9.91 billion, of which 90.4 per cent were foreign investments mainly from the United States, Europe, and Japan in the manufacturing and agriculture sectors.

Redza said the NCIA would promote tourism as the next growth area to further augment the region's burgeoning economic growth.

He added that tourism, particularly medical and nature tourism are promising sectors, given the rising demand from the China and India markets, which have yet to be adequately harnessed.

He said plans and programmes are being formulated to set a firm footing for the Northern Corridor to move into the second phase of its evolution.

Key initiatives include the formulation of the Perlis Strategic Development Plan, the Belum-Temengor Rainforest Integrated Master Plan, a Strategic Plan to Reposition the Kulim Hi-Tech Park and an economic transformation blueprint for the Greater Kamunting region.

Commenting on the challenging and uncertain external economic environment, Redza said the NCIA was well aware of the economic challenges confronting the region.

In this regard, the NCIA has taken several steps to mitigate the adverse impact of an economic slowdown in the region, including the engagement with Frutania Industry in Kangar (Perlis) and World Micro Components in Batu Maung (Penang).

Frutania is involved in downstream activities, particularly in the production of mango juice and pulp.

This initiative has created 180 contract-farming opportunities through the Federal Agriculture Marketing Authority (FAMA) and the Muda Agricultural Development Authority, with 400 farmers benefiting as suppliers.

It has also ensured the creation of a new source of income for farmers in Perlis and Kedah.

World Micro, meanwhile, is expected to improve Malaysia's ability to rid the global supply chain of counterfeit electronic parts through various training programmes, and provide the electronics industry with excess inventory disposition programmes to local and regional businesses.

This programme has since become a value-added component that has further augmented the Northern Corridor's business eco-system.

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia is prepared to facilitate the entry of Indian entrepreneurs into South-East Asia, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

In launching the Asean-India SME Conference yesterday, he said Malaysia was ready to serve as India's gateway to Asean.

“Both Asean and India are looking forward to accelerate the pace of development of their respective economies.

“The conference will focus on how entrepreneurs from both sides can collaborate to take advantage of the business opportunities that will be unfolding in this part of the world,” he said in his keynote address before also launching SMIDEX 2012, an annual showcase of SME innovations.

He also opened the inaugural SME week 2012, which will take place during the final week of June every year at various locations nationwide.

exhibition in Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre yesterday.

There are currently 77 Indian companies operating in Malaysia, including 70 joint ventures.
“Since its beginnings about a decade ago, business relations between Asean and India have seen tremendous growth,” he said, adding that Malaysia was currently the 27th largest foreign investor in India.

Najib said the Government's challenge was in finding ways to support the growth of small and medium industries in the country.

Besides the provision of training and upskilling services, financial support and credit services as well as business matching services, he said the Government also rewarded innovative SMEs.

“We have found that it is inspiring for businesses when we develop recognition programmes to support SMEs that do well,” he said before presenting the SME Innovation Awards to six selected companies.
The grand prize winner, Penchem Technology Sdn Bhd, received prize money of RM1mil, a trophy and a certificate.

The company, which beat 32 other finalists, was also named winner of the “Best Innovation Award” in the manufacturing sector.

Malaysia tawar jadi pintu masuk usahawan kembangkan perniagaan

KUALA LUMPUR, June 21 (Bernama) -- Concerted efforts must be made to tap the entrepreneurial skills and creativity talent in the younger set to realise Malaysia's cherished ambition to emerge as a high income advanced nation, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said.

He said that in western countries companies like Apple, Microsoft, Dell and Facebook were all founded by the younger generation who had sharp entrepreneurial acumen and creativity talents.

"All of them started with difficulties and shortcomings initially but they have succeeded now. They started at the garage but now they owned companies worth millions of dollars," he said when addressing the Bumiputera Technology Entrepreneurs' Dialogue at the Telekom Malaysia Convention Centre Thursday.

Najib said the information and communications technology sector and creativity played a crucial role in creating new wealth resources for the nation.

He said Malaysians were very fortunate as the country has strong fundamentals in the ICT field and creative media.

The Government has established incubators and ICT hubs at various places country-wide, he said.

"The Government has also allocated various grants and offered incentive schemes. The Government has entrusted many agencies to help entrepreneurs to develop on whatever new ideas and attractive products that can generate income to the people," he said.

In efforts to attain the Bumiputera equity as targeted by the government, the Prime Minister said Bumiputera companies must identify talents, uniqueness and individual strength and pool them to form a powerful entity.

He said keen competition in the current globalisation era warranted changes in the government's role and functions to be that of a facilitator to create a favourable environment for entrepreneurs' success.

Najib said the Government would reduce its direct involvement in business but would nevertheless continue to support Bumiputera entrepreneurs to ensure that they succeeded at every level.

"The Government's role is to ensure adequate access and elimination of obstacles to creativity and good ideas," he added.

Earlier, Najib opened the convention centre.

The dialogue is hosted by the Malaysia Association of Bumiputera ICT Industry and Entrepreneurs.

KUALA LUMPUR: The government has drawn up an SME master plan to chart the direction and progress of the country's small- and medium- sized enterprises (SMEs).

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak said the plan will focus on creating an enabling ecosystem to accelerate the SME growth.

"One of the strategic goals under the plan is to promote innovation and the adoption of technology by SMEs," he said at the launch of Smidex 2012, Asean-India SME conference and SME Week here yesterday.

The master plan is one of the many efforts taken by the government to support the growth of the SME sector.

"We have also found that it is inspiring for businesses when we develop recognition programmes to support SMEs that excel," Najib said.

Therefore in 2010, the inaugural SME Innovation Award was introduced to recognise SMEs that are deemed most innovative.

The winner of the best innovative SME will receive the prestigious RM1 million cash prize and a trophy.

He said the government recently launched a RM500 million syariah-compliant commercialisation innovation fund for SMEs with innovative products or services which are already at the stage of commercialisation.

"Another effort which we are trying to do for winners from SMEs that have performed very well is to create a green lane for them so that the government is able to take up some of their products and services.

"A complaint sometimes heard is how do they become fame, how do they become regional champions when they have without businesses back home," Najib said.

He said SMEs employ the most number of people outside government, contributing to a large chunk of the gross domestic product.

They also provide the linkages between big businesses and small ones.

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's information, technology and communications (ICT) sector is kickstarting merger and acquisition activities so that they are able to compete with the world's top ICT companies.

Malaysian Association of Bumiputera ICT Industry and Entrepreneurs president Ashran Ghazi said a test pilot initiative is under way to merge five Bumiputera ICT companies with the help of government-owned venture capital firm MalaysiaVenture Capital Management Bhd (Mavcap).

"We will see what happens after the merger takes place. If it is successful, we will carry out more merger activities which will also be open to non-Bumiputera ICT companies," Ashran told reporters here yesterday on the sidelines of the Bumiputera Technopreneur Dialogue with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.

Ashran, who is also the National Entrepreneurs Forum (NEF) president, said for starters, each company and Mavcap will set up an entity with each party having its own stake. Mavcap will pull out after two years after recouping its investments.

He said the initiative is necessary as currently there are too many ICT companies involved in the same activity such as creative content or software development.

Earlier, Najib witnessed a signing of a memorandum between NEF and Mavcap for a merger and acquisition programme that will help Bumiputera entrepreneurs.

Also present were MDeC chief executive officer Datuk Badlisham Ghazali, TM chairman Datuk Dr Halim Shafie and group chief executive officer Datuk Seri Zamzamzairani Mohd Isa.

Najib in his speech said in order for Malaysia to become a high-income nation, it must tap into the entrepreneurial and creative spirit of its youths.

The dialogue was organised by the Malaysian Association of Bumiputera ICT Industry and NEF.

ACCIM: Need to cut electricity tariffs

Source From (Business Times): http://www.btimes.com.my/Current_News/BTIMES/articles/willyc/Article/

By Roziana Hamsawi

THE Associated Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Malaysia (ACCCIM) has urged the authorities to find ways to reduce the cost of generating electricity before its tariffs here become the highest in the region.

Its outgoing president Tan Sri William Cheng said ACCCIM hopes that the government and Tenaga Nasional Bhd can be more innovativein resolving this matter, just like what Thailand had done.

He said despite interest shown by foreign investors in the country's Economic Transformation Programme, they are however highly concerned about production costs.

"For example, if we continue to increase the unit cost of our electricity as scheduled, we will be the highest among regional countries," Cheng said in his speech at the ACCCIM 66th annual general meeting here yesterday.

The meeting was officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.

ACCCIM is also requesting that the gas price be within a competitive, mid-range rate as charged by other gas-producing countries for supply to their local industries.

"With this, our industries will be in a better position to compete and we can attract more foreign investors to invest in manufacturing," he said.

Cheng also reiterated ACCCIM's view on the issue of minimum wage. The trade body wants the rate to be not too high and its implementation not a hasty one.

"The implementation of minimum wage needs to consider the differences between different economic sectors, company location and company size," he said.

In a speech filled with a wide range of suggestions for the government to consider, which is not unusual for ACCCIM, Cheng also spoke on the lack of agricultural land, the sluggish mining sector, teaching languages in school and investing in outsourcing business to benefit female graduates.

"We would like to suggest that the federal government, in collaboration with state governments, open up more land for agricultural production," he said, adding that out of 6.7 million hectares (ha) of cultivable land now, only 2.8 million ha are used for planting crops, livestock farming and aquaculture.

"On a systematic approach, we can open up at least 100,000 to 200,000ha of land a year and in five years, we can have more than 500,000 to one million ha to be used for planting crops, livestock farming, aquaculture and bio-tech," he added.

Touching on reviving the mining sector in view of the rising prices of mineral resources and strong demand from emerging economies, ACCCIM believes that more land and licences should be issued to the business community for mining exploration and development.

Yesterday was Cheng's last day as ACCCIM president and replacing him will be Datuk Lim Kok Cheong, who is Spritzer Bhd director and major shareholder.
