FOUR more Japanese companies have decided to set up operations in Malaysia as part of the government's efforts to woo more investors from the land of the ri-sing sun.

Minister of International Trade and Industry (Miti) Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed said they are small and medium enterprises (SMEs) involved in aluminium, green energy and mushroom cultivation.

"The four companies are in talks with the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (Mida). Hopefully, within one year, all the four firms will start operations here," Mustapa said after presenting the Panasonic Scholarship Award 2013 to two local recipients here yesterday.

Also at the event were Panasonic Management Malaysia Sdn Bhd director Toshiro Okamoto and Panasonic Scholarship Co president Kazuhiro Kawano.

Mustapa said the government will continue to attract investors from Japan, which is Malaysia's largest trade partner.

Last year alone saw Japan register the highest FDIs in the country, amounting to US$3.2 billion (RM10 billion).

"It's not only about attracting large multinational corporations but also Japanese SMEs which are sizeable by themselves," he said.

Meanwhile, Okamoto said Panasonic's new solar factory in Kulim is expected to start operations by the end of this year. It will manufacture Panasonic HIT (Heterojunction with Intrinsic Thin layer) solar modules.

It is learnt that Panasonic plans to invest RM4.6 billion in the new facility that is expected to create some 3,500 new jobs.

Mustapa also reiterated that Miti and Mida will co-host a conference on the Look East Policy themed "A New Dimension" at Istana Hotel next Wednesday. The event, co-organised by the Malaysia-Japan Economic Association (Majeca) and the Japan-Malaysia Economic Association (Jameca), is in conjunction with the Majeca-Jameca 31st Joint Conference that will be held on the same day.
