KUCHING, Oct 24 (Bernama) -- The Sarawak government should collaborate
with local companies, especially small and medium enterprises (SMEs), to
hold big career fairs in universities and other institutions of higher
learning in Peninsular Malaysia, to encourage Sarawakian graduates to
return home and grab skilled job opportunities in the state.

X-Fab Sarawak Sdn Bhd's human resource director, Ng Kam Loong, said the
government could provide financial assistance by sponsoring the
companies with budget constrains to make an impact on new graduates and
professionals and let them be aware of career opportunities in the
various economic sectors.
"Instead of merely distributing flyers or advertising in the
newspapers, why don't the state government foot the bill for the SMEs to
organise career fairs as part of efforts to prevent the 'brain drain',"
he said after speaking at a seminar on "New Rules of Talent Management"
organised by JobStreet.com here today.
He said most businesses, both SMEs and even established organisations,
found it more challenging to hire the "right people for the right job"
in Sarawak than elsewhere because many were unaware of the presence of
the state's big high-tech industries or the X-Fab wafer foundry here.
In the case of X-Fab, where 93 per cent of the technical professionals
were Sarawakians and expatriates (seven per cent), he said, it was also
important to mould the new employees to enable them to understand the
corporate environment through soft-skill training.
