"I believe this is a noble effort to develop the rural areas in line
with our aspiration to empower rural youth. I hope they will come
forward to participate in the programme," said Rural and Regional
Development Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal, who is also Semporna
UMNO division chief.
"The government hopes that under this programme, our aim of balancing
income between the country's rural and urban population can be realised
soon," he said when met by reporters after chairing the party's
divisional meeting, in Semporna, Sunday.
Shafie said his ministry, through the various agencies, emphasised on
involvement of young people in entrepreneurship, and the introduction of
the Rural Business Challenge and the 21st Century Village programme was
among the efforts taken towards this end and to instil competitiveness.
He said this year alone, the ministry had given a grant of RM2 million
as a reward for rural entrepreneurs in various fields including
livestock farming who won in the competition.
