Several Malaysian companies, he said, have the potential to penetrate the global market.
"We have big brands like Secret Recipe, Marry Brown and Nelson, and even those selling corn can make it to Mecca.
"Malaysian brands are well-received, especially food products in the
Middle East," he told reporters after launching Oblong Port at Alor
Setar Tower here Thursday.
The kiosk is the second "Sempoi" brand outlet by Seleraku Trading Sdn
Bhd, after its first at the Sultan Abdul Halim airport here.
Mukhriz said his ministry, through the Malaysia External Trade
Development Corporation (Matrade), will help promote local franchises
through trade missions abroad and help local franchise companies that
want to sell to master franchisees.
Mukhriz said local franchise products are well-received in Malaysia
because of their quality, and the government encourages the franchise
system to help young people run their own business.
"Many young people are keen on business, but they do not have the
capital or skills. The franchise system will help train them. What is
important is that they are serious and not leave after a short while,"
he said.
Many franchise operators could not be in business for very long because
they could not pay the high franchise royalty fees, he said.
"Now the system helps the operators, we now understand their problems.
But in the end, it depends on their attitude. In the franchise system,
you cannot leave anytime you like," he said.
