NCIA To Establish 100 High Tech Agropreneurs In NCER

KAGOSHIMA (Japan), July 2 (Bernama) -- The Northern Corridor Implementation Authority (NCIA) plans to establish 100 entrepreneurs in the Northern Corridor Economic Region (NCER) who would be trained as high technology agropreneurs to produce agriculture products of high value and yield.

Its Chief Executive, Datuk Redza Rafiq said the plan will be jointly carried out by local company, JPB Asia Pasifik Sdn Bhd (JPB), and its partner, MRT Japan Co Ltd (MRT), which is a supplier of vegetables and fruits to Japan, Singapore, Thailand, China and the United States.

Both JPB and MRT will be investing about RM105 million towards the purpose, he told journalists covering the signing ceremony here today between JPB and MRT.

Redza said RM35 million has already been spent todate to take care of the various set ups needed in the initial stage.

He said JPB will select the potential entrepreneurs who would be trained to cultivate various farm produce liked by the Japanese people such as rock melon, chilli, salad, snappy peas and Japanese cucumber in six greenhouses located namely in Ara Kuda, Georgetown and another six more in Kuala Nerang, Kedah.

French technology will be used to build the greenhouses but Japanese technology, to be supplied by MRT, will be adopted for the farming and agriculture activities.

MRT will supply various agriculture input such as seedlings and fertilizers while JPB will set up 100 closed greenhouses equipped with fertigation systems.

Redza said 30 per cent of the produce from the entrepreneurs will be marketed locally and the rest to the Japanese markets including in Japan and other countries with high Japanese population such as Thailand, Singapore, China and Hong Kong.

Kagoshima is situated at the southern most prefecture in Honshyu region. It is about 3,200 km to the south from Tokyo by land.

At the signing ceremony here this evening, JPB was represented by its Managing Director Haji Mazri Mansor whike MRT was repsented by its President Shiro Komura.

Apart from Redza, Japan's Congressman from Kagoshima, Hitroshi Moriyama, witnessed the signing.
