Also present were BNM Governor Tan Sri Zeti Akhtar Aziz (right), International Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed and SME Corp CEO Datuk Hafsah Hashim (left).

He said the setting up of the panel was in tandem with the country's aspiration to increase the contribution of the SME sector to the country's economy and prosperity.

"The panel will comprise successful entreprenuers, not necessarily those who are well-known, but have an excellent track record and the time to serve on the panel," he told reporters after chairing the National SME Development Council meeting here today.

Najib said the panel would be headed by International Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed.

"I am also willing to receive and go through the panel's report from time to time," he said.

The Prime Minister also said 155 programmes, costing RM18.4 billion, has been planned for implementation and would benefit 467,838 SMEs.

Najib said funding to the SME sector still remained at a high of 88 per cent.

"About RM23.2 billion has been approved to 56,000 SMEs under the Bank Negara Malaysia SME Fund and as at end-May, RM2.2 billion was still available for disbursement," Najib added.
