Its chairman, Datuk Seri Idris Jusoh, said the fund, under the Mara Education Fund (YPM), set up to create awareness among the Malays to share the responsibility of uplifting their status through education.

"We cannot rely on government money all the time. look at the Singapore Malays , there is no one to help them.

"It high time we come forward to help. if not, who is going to help us," he told reporters at Mara programme which was also attended by its Director-General Datuk Ibrahim Ahmad.

Idris said the Malays no longer lived in hardship like before as many were now successful due to assistance provided by the government.

"Hence, its now time for them to contribute to the fund to meet their children's future education needs," he added.

He said the fund, set up six months ago, had collected RM370,000 and aimed to raise RM1 billion by end of the year.
