As of June 28 this year, a total of 672 franchise companies have been
registered nationwide, he said in his speech at the launch of the
Community Franchise Programme in Sabah here Saturday.
Ahmad Bashah said the government has allocated RM8 million for the
Small Franchise Loans Scheme (SPKF) through his ministry to assist local
franchisees from the low and medium income groups, and as of June, 247
applications for loans totalling RM6.32 million have been approved.
"Although the SPKF fund has only RM1.68 million left, applications are still open," he said.
Ahmad Bashah said Malaysians' low participation in the franchise
industry is due to the lack of capital and financing as well as the low
level of awareness of franchise opportunities.
"This industry is for all income groups," he said.
A total of 21 franchisors, including 17 from Peninsular Malaysia and four from Sabah, attended the programme.

Industri Francais Dijangka Sumbang Sehingga RM24.5 Bilion KDNK Tahun Depan
KOTA KINABALU, 29 Jun (Bernama) -- Timbalan Menteri Perdagangan Dalam
Negeri, Koperasi dan Kepenggunaan, Datuk Ahmad Bashah Md. Hanipah yakin
industri francais mampu menyumbang sehingga RM24.5 bilion kepada jumlah
Keluaran Dalam Negara Kasar (KDNK) tahun depan.

Promosi keropok lekor Pahang

Dibantu tiga orang pekerja, beliau giat menjalankan kerja meracun rumput, menggemburkan tanah dan seterusnya membaja benih berkenaan sehingga memetik tongkol jagung.

Economic growth spurs consumer confidence
SHAH ALAM: The Malaysian Retailer-Chains Association (MRCA) president Datuk Nelson Kwok expects the local retail sector to see marked progress in the second half of the year. “We are expecting higher growth in the second half of the year and I hope that more initiatives would be put in place to enhance growth in the small and medium enterprise (SME) sector, as you know that the sector contributes significantly to the country’s economic performance,” he told StarBiz on the sidelines of the MRCA CEO Night event here.

“The outlook for the retail sector remains positive on the back of robust economic growth which has raised the confidence level of the consumer to spend.
“The spin-off effect from the retail sector is huge, and other industries such as manufacturing and logistics have benefited from it,” he added.
This year marks the sixth consecutive year of the CEO Night event, organised by the MRCA to provide a platform for its members to network as well as gain insight from industry leaders based on their experience.
“This year, we have more than 900 participants, with more than 600 SMEs in attendance, to celebrate the biggest CEO night thus far,” Kwok said, citing the previous event participant at between 500 and 600.
“The growth in the number of participants shows that they are very enthusiastic about learning from the captains of industry to help their businesses move forward,” he noted.
In his presentation speech, Kwok said Malaysian businesses could further expand by looking at other countries such as Mozambique as a new market with vast opportunities.
As such, MRCA is planning a business trip to that country in August this year.
Also present was SP Setia Bhd president and chief executive officer Tan Sri Liew Kee Sin, who advised the participants to be always equipped with detailed statistics and data, as it had always been his recipe for success.
Liew said that he was happy to host the CEO Night this year, given that the Setia City Convention Centre in Shah Alam was still new.
“We are honoured to have this kind of event held here and are hoping to host it again next year,” he said.
On another note, Liew said the Setia City Mall was “doing very well”, considering that it was launched just a year ago. “Every weekend, we have more than 100,000 visitors and probably 50,000 during weekdays. Hence, the retail outlook for SP Setia is very good,” he said.

Wan tauke santan
LELAKI ini masih muda. IUsianya baharu menjengah 37 tahun. Kata orang Indonesia, masih ganteng!
Dia optimis, kerana strategi perniagaannya menjadi. Malah, santannya mendapat sambutan tinggi.
"Saya sangat yakin.
Ternyata Wan Mohd. Salleh benar-benar mengotakan janjinya. Setelah menerima bantuan modal perniagaan sebanyak RM29,100 daripada LZS, dia merancakkan lagi perniagaannya.
"Bagaikan mati hidup semula. Itulah perasaan saya apabila LZS memberikan modal tersebut. Bayangkan, dahulu saya hanya menyewa mesin, kini semuanya milik saya sendiri.

"Program Inovasi Usahawan Muda - SME Bank Y-Biz Challenge 2013" has received good response from schools nationwide.
SME Bank managing director Datuk Mohd Radzif Yunus said of the 110 schools invited, 82 participated, with the winners using their winning money to enter a competition in Romania and winning the Gold Medal in the Young Inventor category.
"This year, we have plans to provide some form of support to the winner keen on competing in the international arena," he said.
The first prize winner of this year's SME Bank Y-Biz challenge will
receive RM20,000 in cash, first runner-up RM15,000 and RM10,000 for the
third spot.
Mohd Radzif said this is SME Bank's signature corporate responsibility event that it is partnering with the Malaysian Design Council and supported by the Education Ministry.
"This is part of our initiative to nurture the youth to be future entrepreneurs and being our second time organising this, we discovered there are a lot of them out there with creative ideas."
He added that last year, the competition was open to only invited schools but this year it is open to all secondary school students, to allow them to explore and expand their creativity by innovating and proposing great ideas.
Mohd Radzif said for this programme, it is SME Bank's objective to develop and stir entrepreneurship interest among students and to build a better generation for the country's future economy.
Y-Biz challenge, he noted will allow students to think outside the box and at the same time enhance leadership skills.
It also serves the Education Ministry's aspirations to encourage students to be active in extra-curricular activities in school and at the national level, producing highly motivated students with interest in science, technology and entrepreneurship.
Mohd Radzif said as for the SME Bank, apart from inculcating entrepreneurship among students, teachers will also be exposed to new teaching techniques which can produce creative and innovative students.
The criteria for projects to be submitted, said Mohd Radzif, must be with original ideas, value-added, innovative, environmental-friendly and with commercial value.
Preliminary screening will be done in all states to select 20 schools and to move on to the semi-final round.
"In the semi-final round, they will present proposals and then visit our factory complex where they will experience firsthand the mechanics of production and meet entrepreneurs," said Mohd Radzif.
Ten schools will then be selected into the final round and each finalist will be provided with a seed capital of RM2,000 each to produce prototype of the projects.
The final presentation to the jury will be done at the national level and juries will comprise experts in their respective fields and also representatives from the SME Bank, Education Ministry and Malaysian Design Council.
The competition started on May 2 and will close on July 19. Entry forms and proposal guidelines can be downloaded from www.smebank.com.my

Mesyuarat Agung MAPEM pertama di Shah Alam.
Presiden MAPEM, Tan Sri Rozali Ismail, berkata peniaga Bumiputera masih gagal menguasai ekonomi dan ia dikhuatiri menimbulkan jurang ekonomi berbanding kaum lain menjelang 2020.
Katanya, memang menjadi tanggungjawab MAPEM untuk terus membantu
peniaga Bumiputera supaya mampu bersaing dalam perniagaan sekali gus
mencapai penguasaan ekonomi negara sehingga 60 peratus.
Gagal kuasai ekonomi

CGC sets RM2b loan target
CREDIT Guarantee Corporation Malaysia Bhd (CGC) is targeting to guarantee a total of RM2 billion in loans for 9,000 small and medium enterprises (SMEs) this year.

CGC managing director Datuk Wan Azhar Wan Ahmad said for the first half of this year, it has guaranteed RM500,000 in loans.
"The first four months were quite slow for us this year because of the general election, but things are picking up now," he said yesterday.
Last year, CGC guaranteed a total of RM1 billion in loans. Over the last 40 years, it has guaranteed a total of RM51.4 billion in loans to more than 420,000 SMEs.
Meanwhile, Bank Negara Malaysia deputy governor Datuk Muhammad Ibrahim
yesterday launched CGC's book entitled "Catalysing SME Growth" .
The book is aimed at creating a better understanding of CGC's role among its stakeholders, especially SMEs.
It documents CGC's role in promoting the growth and development of SMEs through its guarantee schemes over the last 40 years.
Wan Azhar said CGC had managed 42 guarantee schemes tailored to suit the specific needs of SMEs in every sector.
He added that the firm has always been consistent in looking out for innovative ways to improve SME outreach, especially in the financing of smaller businesses.
Muhammad Ibrahim also urged banks to lower its financing cost when giving out loans to SMEs as "the current rates imposed are too high at about 10 to 12 per cent average".
He also called for CGC to intensify the promotion of its products to make CGC a household name among SMEs.
He also urged CGC to extend its guarantee to new start-ups and new growth areas like green technology.
Wan Azhar said those suggestions will be looked at closely by CGC to further enhance its role as a vital financial intermediary in the country.
He also said CGC's role and and its contribution to Malaysia's SME growth have been recognised by other emerging countries in Africa and the Middle East.
He said CGC recently signed an memorandum of understanding with a Mongolian credit guarantee firm that will see it guiding the latter on how best to build its guarantee system there.
Next week, it will sign an agreement with Papua New Guinea's credit guarantee institute for the same purpose, said Wan Azhar.

He was speaking to reporters after the launch of CGC's book titled "Catalysing SME Growth" by Bank Negara Malaysia Deputy Governor Datuk Muhammad Ibrahim here Friday.
Also present was CGC's newly appointed chairman Datuk Md Agil Mohd Natt.
The book aims to create a better understanding of CGC's role amongst its stakeholders particularly in small and medium enterprises (SMEs).
It documents CGC's role in promoting the growth and development of SMEs through its guarantee schemes over the last 40 years.
The corporation has consistently been looking out for innovative ways to improve the SMEs outreach especially in the financing of smaller businesses.
To date, CGC had guaranteed a total of RM51.4 billion of loans benefitting more than 420,000 SMEs.
Wan Azhar said CGC was on track to achieve RM2 billion loans guarantee in 2013 against RM1 billion recorded last year.
"For the first half of this year, we achieved over RM500 million (of loans guaranteed). After the election, it has picked up.
"I estimate (the loans guarantee) to benefit 8,000 to 9,000 new SMEs," said Wan Azhar.

KUB: A&W doesn't need white knight
PETALING JAYA: KUB Malaysia Bhd may not need a strategic partner to come to the rescue of its fast food business, A&W Malaysia, as it has managed to turn around the division on its own. According to managing director Datuk Wan Mohd Nor Wan Ahmad, A&W has returned to the black in the first quarter ended March this year.

“Cumulative profit up to May is about RM400,000 and if we can manage to do this on our own, then why should we dilute our stakes? This is a huge improvement from the RM4mil loss recorded in the same period last year.
“We also have a cash pile of about RM144mil that could be used for the expansion of A&W outlets at strategic locations, as well as for working capital for the group.
“We will also continue to further strengthen this business via a more effective management and operational skills,” he told the press after the company's AGM yesterday.
Wan Mohd Nor added that KUB was looking to open three to four more outlets next year in the Klang Valley as well as in Sabah and Sarawak.
“We are interested in standalone locations similar to our outlet in Petaling Jaya, which is doing quite well.
“We are also in the final stages of disposing our A&W Thailand to a Malaysian investor residing in Thailand,” he said without disclosing the value of the transaction.
From a group perspective, KUB, which is also involved in the energy, construction and palm oil businesses, was quite optimistic of being in the black for the whole of 2013.
For the first quarter of this year, KUB posted a pre-tax profit of RM1.25mil on the back of RM224.1mil in revenue.
This is an improvement from financial year 2012, where the conglomerate managed to reduce its pre-tax losses by 67% to RM16.8mil compared with 2011.
On its plantation business, Wan Mohd Nor said its subsidiary was on the right track to increase the group's land bank from 7284.34ha to 28,327.99ha by 2015.
“Where construction is concerned, as KLIA2's development is entering its final stages of completion, we are glad to finish the work on a timely manner. Once again, I assure that the delay in KLIA2 is not caused by KUB, and we are still undertaking the remaining 10% work.”

"While REDtone already has a strong grip on the country's SME sector, we believe that there are still good growth opportunities and sees REDtone Fibre+ as one way of helping the company to get a larger slice of the pie," it added.
REDtone group CEO Lau Bik Soon said as REDtone Fibre+ rides on TM's nationwide high speed broadband (HSBB) network, it will enable REDtone to reach out to more SMEs, and the new service will also complement the company's current data offerings for the SME sector.
"All these are a part of continuous efforts to strengthen REDtone's data business. The data segment has been driving the group's turnover and profit, and currently contributes close to 50% just like our voice business to the total revenue.
"We expect our data business to contribute 50% to the group's profit by the end of this financial year 2013," he said.

SDC's Performance Encouraging, Says Juhar
KOTA KINABALU, June 17 (Bernama) -- The performance of the Sabah
Development Corridor (SDC), now in its second phase (2011-2015), has
been encouraging, with 11 high-impact projects with an approved state
government investment of RM1.7 billion being implemented, says head of
state Tun Juhar Mahiruddin.

Total investments for SDC projects at end-2012 stood at RM14.5 billion, and SDC will step up efforts to expand value-added activities through collaborations with global firms and local small and medium entreprises, he said when presenting the government's policy speech at the opening of the first term of the 14th State Legislative Assembly sitting at Likas near here Monday.
Juhar said the state government will enhance efforts to attract more private investment and provide better infrastructure and highly-skilled manpower to spur SDC's development.
The state's manufacturing sector targets investments worth RM5.44 billion for infrastructure projects, with a focus on industry clusters such as the Palm Oil Industry Cluster (POIC) in Lahad Datu and Sandakan, the Sipitang Oil and Gas Industrial Park (SOGIP) and the Kota Kinabalu Industrial Park (KKIP), he said.
Of the total, RM5.44 billion is expected to go to SOGIP, RM1 billion to KKIP, RM415 million to POIC Lahad Datu, RM328 million to POIC Sandakan and RM1.2 billion to manufacturing.
The oil and gas sector, the main contributor to the state's gross domestic product, is expected to expand further with new oil discoveries off Sabah's coast, he said.
Juhar said the state's good governance, financial management and integrity have given foreign and domestic investors the confidence to invest, pointing out that in 2012, Sabah was third among the states in attracting investments into the manufacturing sector after Selangor and Johor.
In 2012, the state produced 9.6 million litres of fresh milk worth RM60 million, while this year the figure is expected to rise to 11.0 million litres, mainly for the 1Malaysia Milk programme, he said, adding the government will also encourage the state's ruminant industry given the availability of biomass and Sabah's freedom from hoof and mouth disease.
Sabah's poverty rate declined to 8.1 per cent in 2012 from 19.7 per cent in 2009, he said, adding the state's Public Works Department has been allocated RM186.9 million to build roads in the main and smaller towns as well as upgrade those in the main sectors identified as drivers of the state's economy.
An allocation of RM164.9 milion has also been allocated for water supply, including for reducing non-revenue water, construction of new plants and water pipe replacement, while efforts to expand broadband penetration especially in rural areas will be enhanced, he added.

Dena Bank turns east to grow CASA and SME loans
KOLKATA: State-run Dena Bank, the western India focused lender, is
turning to east as the region appears less crowded and shows
opportunity.

Chairman and managing director Ashwani Kumar said the bank has decided to focus especially on West Bengal and Bihar in the east to mobilise the untapped low cost deposits and lend to small scale sectors.
It plans to bifurcate the Kolkata zone into Kolkata and Patna as it increases its eastern focus. West Bengal, Odisha and eight northeast states will be under Kolkata zone while Bihar and Jharkhand will be managed by the Patna zonal office.
"These are good CASA (current and savings account) and SME belts," Kumar said. He was here to inaugurate a branch in an unbanked village, 20 km away from the city.
CASA deopsits are less costly and rise in the ratio adds to profitability. In the asset side, banks earn better returns from SME loans.
Dena Bank plans to open at least 13 more branches in the east and northeast regions including five in the state in 2013-14.
This region contributes just about 4% or Rs 7000 crore of Dena's business of Rs 1.64 lakh.
Kumar said the lender is also focusing on Haryana and Punjab to improve its farm lending. The bank may add 150-200 branches this year across the country.

SME uplift a shot in the arm for FDIs
CYBERJAYA (June 17, 2013): Small and medium enterprises
(SMEs) can help attract more foreign direct investments (FDIs) into the
country by uplifting their standards, said SMI Association of Malaysia
president Teh Kee Sin (pix).
Source from (The Sun Daily): http://www.thesundaily.my/news/743749
Published: Jun 17, 2013
"There is stiff competition for FDIs. Every country is pushing hard to get more FDIs into their economy. When foreign investments come to Malaysia, they will see how strong and capable our SMEs are. If SMEs are not ready, competing for FDIs would be a big challenge," he told SunBiz in an interview.
He said most Malaysian SMEs are mainly involved in the supporting industries such as manufacturing components, being a contract manufacturer or original equipment manufacturer (OEM).
"As a result, their contribution towards the country's gross domestic product (GDP) is relatively not so high compared with some of the developed countries like Hong Kong, Japan, Taiwan, South Korea and Singapore where contribution from SMEs can be as high as 60%."
Malaysia's SME contribution to the economy is only 32%, Teh noted, adding that this is because few SMEs are involved in high value-added activities.
The government is targeting to increase the SME contribution in terms of GDP to 41% and it is hoped that exports from SMEs can reach 25% by 2020 from 19% currently.
"Only 19% of SMEs are able to venture abroad and one of the reasons could be that most don't have a brand (recognition) as well as (conduct) research and development. Most of the things that SMEs do are subcontracting jobs or OEM."
He said when SMEs want to supply their products or services to businesses abroad, these businesses would rather buy from their local SMEs rather than from Malaysian SMEs.
"Market access is still a big issue for SMEs. Many SMEs' mindset is still fixed on the local market," he added.
With the Asean Economic Community realising the goal of regional economic integration by 2015, envisaging a single market and production base, a highly competitive economic region, a region of equitable economic development and fully integrated into the global economy, Teh said this can be a good opportunity for the business community.
"However, if SMEs are not ready, it's going to be a threat to us. In terms of management, we're still so much behind. We may lack behind in times to come, especially when global business competition is greater. I'm worried that SMEs may be losing out, if they cannot pick up on good management skills."
Teh believes that the biggest challenge facing SMEs is obtaining financing.
"You may blame the SMEs for not supplying enough documents or not showing good (financial) performance but at the same time we're also annoyed by the kind of requirements by financial institutions. It's insatiable.
"Some SMEs are unable to express themselves clearly to the financial institutions and hence the banks don't understand their potential and are reluctant to offer loans to them," he said.
With 17 branches in Malaysia and over 5,000 members, the SMI Association of Malaysia's main purpose is to provide the link between government bodies and relevant agencies to the SME community. On its part, it conducts regular dialogues and meetings with many government agencies.
"Most SMEs are not aware of the government's latest ruling, policy or incentive given to the community so they may come to us. We encourage SMEs to attend our courses and workshops, which are aimed at developing them into better SMEs," said Teh.
He pointed that being a Malaysian SME does have its advantages compared with the other Asean countries.
"Although we're number two to Singapore (in terms of standards), we have bigger land, cheaper cost and we're a multi-lingual society. And if we capitalise on all these, we still stand a good chance.
"But we cannot rest on our laurels. We must keep moving and continue to develop ourselves so that we can be above others in the region. Singapore can be good but in terms of rental, land, cost of manufacturing, they can't compete with us."
SMEs are also faced with the problems of human capital, labour shortage and human resources issues such as the minimum wage policy and new retirement age for the private sector.
He said most SMEs think of human capital development as an expense and something that is short term, forgetting that if they do not invest in human capital, they do not have the efficiency to carry out their day-to-day duties.
"Labour cost has been increasing, so the cost of manufacturing is also getting higher. We need to train our people to be more capable and to opt for automation. This human capital development is important to defray the increasing costs of manufacturing.
"SMEs have to be prepared for the rising cost of labour and they need to factor in that. If they absorb the costs, some SMEs will be running losses as most are in the supporting line. If they don't handle the minimum wage policy well, some SMEs may even go bust."
On the new retirement age for workers from 55 to 60 in the private sector that will take effect on July 1, Teh said this will also translate to higher cost for SMEs.
