TAWAU, June 30 (Bernama) -- A total of 89 cooperatives, involving more
than 30,000 members, have been registered with the Cooperatives
Commission of Malaysia as at end-June, says Tawau CCM Director Nureen
Nur Fauzi.
The cooperatives have combined shares of 2.5 million and assets worth RM30 million.
"This is not at all comparable with the cooperative movement in
developed nations, especially in terms of its contribution to Gross
Domestic Product," she told reporters after the annual general meeting
of Balung Cocos Cooperative Tawau Bhd which was opened by Sabah
Assistant Finance Minister Tawfiq Abu Bakar Titingan.
Nureen said the government, via the Domestic Trade, Co-operatives and
Consumerism Ministry and CCM, wanted cooperatives to contribute at least
five per cent to the country's GDP.
