Sarawak Government Urged To Collaborate With SMEs To Woo Sarawak Grads Home

KUCHING, Oct 24 (Bernama) -- The Sarawak government should collaborate with local companies, especially small and medium enterprises (SMEs), to hold big career fairs in universities and other institutions of higher learning in Peninsular Malaysia, to encourage Sarawakian graduates to return home and grab skilled job opportunities in the state.

X-Fab Sarawak Sdn Bhd's human resource director, Ng Kam Loong, said the government could provide financial assistance by sponsoring the companies with budget constrains to make an impact on new graduates and professionals and let them be aware of career opportunities in the various economic sectors.

"Instead of merely distributing flyers or advertising in the newspapers, why don't the state government foot the bill for the SMEs to organise career fairs as part of efforts to prevent the 'brain drain'," he said after speaking at a seminar on "New Rules of Talent Management" organised by JobStreet.com here today.

He said most businesses, both SMEs and even established organisations, found it more challenging to hire the "right people for the right job" in Sarawak than elsewhere because many were unaware of the presence of the state's big high-tech industries or the X-Fab wafer foundry here.

In the case of X-Fab, where 93 per cent of the technical professionals were Sarawakians and expatriates (seven per cent), he said, it was also important to mould the new employees to enable them to understand the corporate environment through soft-skill training.

Asmah (kiri) ketika mempromosikan produk keluaran Muhazrin.

Start swimming with the big fish

MANY would agree that market access remains one of the major barriers for SMEs apart from access to finance. In their daily existence, it is quite tough for SMEs to knock on the doors of large conglomerates to seek opportunities to be part of their global supply chain.

They will have to take the extra mile to sell their products and services, as well as provide the assurance that they are the ones these big players are looking for. On the other hand, SMEs that can adhere to the stringent market requirements and high-quality standards are usually the ones that are sought-after by these huge corporations.

There are times, when I was approached by SMEs complaining about how tough it was for them to penetrate into the local market, let alone in the global playing field. I hear them and understand the constraints faced. Nonetheless, I believe in the words by the man with positive thinking, Norman Vincent Peale; "Every problem has in it the seeds of its own solution. If you don't have any problems, you don't get any seeds".

And just to share, I always remind myself and my team to practice the 4C principle, which stands for Connect, Communicate, Consult and Colla-borate.

This has always been our main ingredients used when executing every given task. Hence, being the central coordinating agency, we are here to communicate with you and connect you in many ways in identifying the potential solutions to overcome the many challenges faced, particularly ease of market penetration.

In fact, we have been continuously providing avenues to link potential SMEs to the big players over the past 15 years. Our industrial linkage programme, now branded as Business Linkage Programme (BLING) is developed to create linkages between potential SMEs and various MNCs, large corporations as well as hypermarkets like Tesco, Giant, AEON and Mydin.

On top of that, our dedicated BLING team is always exploring opportunities with the big names in the industry. I'm proud to mention that to date SME Corp has succesfully organised business opportunity sessions with renowned global players with the likes of The Boeing Co, BAE Systems, international hypermarket chains as well as MRT Corp to name a few. Indeed, we brought along our business matching session to the Global Women Summit 2012, in Athens recently.

From time to time, we were often approached by the big corporations to assist them in sourcing for suitable SMEs that could be their potential suppliers. Thanks to our in-house diagnostic tool which is famously known as SME Competitiveness Rating for Enhancement (SCORE).

With SCORE, MNCs and large corporations are assured that SMEs we proposed are the cream of the crop as only companies rated three star and above will be selected to participate in this programme.

Once we have identified the pool of SMEs, a business opportunity session will be organised, bridging them with the big corporations to further explore business opportunities. As in previous years, the highlight of Smidex 2012 which was held two weeks ago, is the one-to-one Business Matching.

Marking its 15th year, the ultimate objective of this session is to provide a channel for SMEs to forge strategic business partnerships and networking with the Large and Multi-National Corp. This is indeed the perfect opportunity for SMEs to understand what it takes to be their suppliers.

Through sessions like this, SMEs will take the necessary steps to upgrade their technology and comply to the necessary standards once they have a better understanding on the customer's requirements.

Since the inception of Smi-dec/SME Corp, the business linkage activities done in matching SMEs and their potential partners comprising MNCs, GLCs and large companies have generated nearly RM1.2 billion worth of potential sales, with a total of 1,372 linkages.

Last year alone saw a total of 178 business matching sessions materialised at our SME Annual Showcase, with sales negotiations valued at RM194.7 million.

I am delighted that this year, a total of 231 business linkage materialised, with sales negotiations valued at RM247 million negotiated during the three-day session!

My heartfelt thanks to Proton, Perodua, BAE Systems, The Boeing Co, hypermarkets and the rest of our partners for their support and commitment shown during the recent Smidex 2012-Business Matching Session.

Did you miss that business opportunity? Don't worry ... our business linkage activities are not only done during Smidex, it is a year-long activity. Don't hesitate to talk to us if you need our assistance to link you with your potential clients. After all, this is what we do best; getting you connected and pioneering your business transformation! Just remember what B.C. Forbes said:

"If you don't drive your business, you will be driven out of business!'. Put on your gear, and let's start swimming with the big fish ...

BAE Systems seeks more partners

KUALA LUMPUR: Global defence, security and aerospace company BAE Systems is looking at expanding its relationship with Malaysian partners and doubling its efforts to engage with more small and medium enterprises (SMEs).

Its managing director for Southeast Asia, John Brosnan, said having established Kuala Lumpur as its Southeast Asian hub since moving from Singapore last year, BAE Systems was now looking beyond Klang Valley to strengthen its presence.

"We are here for the long term. We went to Sabah and Sarawak, east coast of Peninsular Malaysia and Johor, again trying to find potential partners. It's a continuous engagement," Brosnan said.

He said the British company was doubling its efforts to find new business partners, especially SMEs.

BAE Systems has had a presence in Malaysia for over 20 years. The company is currently involved in more than a dozen partnerships and joint ventures with local companies such as Composites Technology Research Malaysia Systems Integration Sdn Bhd (CTRM), Boustead Heavy Industries Corp and BHIC Bofors Asia Sdn Bhd.

"Malaysia has been a pretty good experience for us. CTRM is an example. We played a small part to what the company is today - from a handful of people working to thousands now," Brosnan said.

He said BAE Systems found a lot of small companies with big aspirations that were well-managed with good capabilities in Malaysia.

"We need companies that have agility, creativity and innovation. Those are the qualities we found here," Brosnan said.

"We want to be part of the industries here and understand economic priorities of these places," he said.

Brosnan said although BAE Systems was mainly a defence company, its investment track record was not only in defence industry but also in areas such as human capital and education.

He said one of the areas the company was looking at was cybersecurity. Bernama

BAE to grow defence biz with industrial participation

KUALA LUMPUR (July 1, 2012): Global defence, aerospace and security company BAE Systems is looking at expanding its relationship with local partners and doubling its efforts to engage with more small and medium enterprises (SMEs) as it continues to focus on the defence market in Malaysia.

BAE Systems Malaysia vice-president Mark Burgess told SunBiz: "Historically, there has always been a defence market for us in Malaysia and the focus will remain, as a business and in terms of the level of industrial participation that we can work toward here."

In the defence market, he said BAE Systems is looking at partnerships with DRB-Hicom Defence Technologies Sdn Bhd (Deftech) on armoured patrol vehicles for the army, as well as an upgrade to a military bridging system sold some eight months ago. In addition, there are also prospects for naval weapons for the new Second Generation Patrol Vessels through its ongoing negotiation with Boustead Heavy Industries Corp Bhd.

"We can expand our role in the same market. Rather than just focus on the maintenance and overhaul, we can look at joint ventures with Boustead. We can explore more opportunities for voyage repairs of allied navy and where they can stop for repairs on vessels," he said.

"In addition, we can also look at adjacent markets like oil and gas as it is significant in East Malaysia. There are also opportunities in renewable energy that produce turbines to generate electricity in remote areas. All in all, there is a diverse range of opportunities or technological scale that we can bring to the region.

"That said, cyber security, while it generally has a lower value and is slower to reap, is just as, if not more important, to the defence of the nation in many aspects. Cyber security is the day-to-day maintenance of the integrity of critical national infrastructure, whether it's the ATM network, power generation network, mobile phone network or communication."

The defence business currently accounts for 95% of BAE Systems' revenue in Malaysia with the balance coming from its security business.

"Over the next five years, we think this balance will shift to an 80% contribution from the defence market and 20% from security, simply because defence equipment is more expensive than security systems," said Burgess.

On cyber security, he said BAE Systems has ambitious plans and high hopes for its ability to leverage its strength in this market and sell to the Malaysian government and private sector.

"We're looking to use Malaysia as the home for back-up operations. We've been winning lots of work in Australia and US and we're looking to do the back-office IT cyber security work here. In the ICT environment, Malaysia has a high skill base and is low cost."

He said BAE Systems Stratsec conducts cyber consultancy, systems testing and has experienced significant growth, with expectations that its employee base would double over the next 12 months and double again in 24 months.

"The cyber security market includes the government, like Ministry of Home Affairs, CyberSecurity Malaysia and the National Security Council. But we also do a growing amount of work with the local financial sectors. We've won a number of contracts recently, particularly in the banking and financial sector."

He said BAE Systems has a successful history of working with local industries to develop their capabilities and buying their output from them, where it transfers skills and technology and the local industries become sources of supply for BAE's global markets.

"Increasingly, we'll be looking at working in close partnership with a range of different companies for the transfer of technology and know-how to exploit our product and technology for our own supply chain as well as for Malaysia and the regional markets."

As part of its long-term commitment to Malaysia, BAE Systems continues to broaden its industrial participation reach throughout the peninsula. Having visited East Malaysia in May to engage with the state government, regional development agencies and local businesses, the company is now targeting the East Coast, including Kota Bharu and Kuantan.

"We now turn our focus towards the East Coast where we will engage state government, regional development agencies and local businesses, thereby giving us new opportunities to forge strong, sustainable relationships and identify mutual growth opportunities," Burgess said.

BAE Systems will grow its three market segments in Malaysia, which are services, electronic systems and platforms.

Burgess said about 20-25% of the value lies in procurement while 70-80% is in services over the life of the platforms.

"The initial sale is from the platform segment. When you sell an aircraft, you have a big procurement value associated with the aircraft sale. But the majority of the value actually is supporting the equipment through its life."

BAE Systems has had a presence in Malaysia for more than 20 years with an established Southeast Asia regional headquarters in Kuala Lumpur. The company is looking to play a significant role in Malaysia's economic, technology and capacity development via partnerships with innovative SMEs, government agencies and key academic institutions, as well as supporting the development of skills and technology through vocational training.

BAE Systems Doubles Efforts To Find More Business Partners In Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR, July 1 (Bernama) -- Global defence, security and aerospace company, BAE Systems, is looking at expanding its relationship with Malaysian partners and doubling its efforts to engage with more small and medium enterprises (SMEs).

Its managing director, South-East Asia, John Brosnan, said having established Kuala Lumpur as its South-East Asian hub since moving from Singapore last year, BAE Systems was now looking beyond Klang Valley to strengthen its presence.

"We are here for the long term. We just started the process of going outside Klang Valley. We went to Sabah and Sarawak, East Coast of Peninsular Malaysia and Johor, again trying to find potential partners. It's a continuous engagement," Brosnan told Bernama.

Brosnan said the British company was doubling its efforts to find new business partners, especially SMEs.

"We have to be realistic about it but we found some quite good connections," he said.

BAE Systems has had a presence in Malaysia for over 20 years. The company is currently involved in more than a dozen partnerships and joint-ventures with local companies such as Composites Technology Research Malaysia Systems Integration Sdn Bhd (CTRM), Boustead Heavy Industry Corp and BHIC Bofors Asia Sdn Bhd.

"Malaysia has been pretty good experience for us. CTRM is an example, we played a small part to what the company is today -- from handful of people working to thousands now," Brosnan said.

He said BAE Systems found a lot of small companies with big aspirations that were well-managed with good capabilities in Malaysia.

"We're a big company, it's quite hard to be as agile as smaller companies. We need companies that have agility, creativity and innovation. Those are the qualities we found here," he said.

Brosnan said a lot companies remembered BAE Systems in early days here as the British Aerospace but the company was no longer just that.

"We're a global company operating in air, sea and land. We want to be part of the industries of society here and we want to understand economic priorities of these places," he said.

Brosnan said although BAE Systems was mainly a defence company, its investment track record was not only in defence industry but also in areas such as human capital and education.

Moving forward, he said, one of the areas the company was looking at was cybersecurity.

"We have established a regional cybersecurity hub for South-East Asia, the BAE Systems Stratsec, here in Kuala Lumpur," Brosnan said.

The BAE Systems Stratsec is the largest provider of independent information security consulting and testing services in Australia and South-East Asia.

Brosnan said the company employed 12 highly-skilled staff, all Malaysians, doing a lot of business working with government agencies and financial services sector.

"It has tremendous capabilities. It's a local company providing high-technology jobs for Malaysians. What we don't want to do is to say hey, we got the answers in Europe, so come and buy it. We want to develop solutions for Malaysia in Malaysia," Brosnan said.

BAE Systems has ambitious growth plans in the area and expects significant increase in size of workforce in the couple of years, he said.

Brosnan said BAE Systems did not see itself as a foreign company operating in Malaysia.

"We want to be part of the Malaysian industry. You will see us more in the coming months," he said.

Gaining entrepreneurial wisdom

ON YOUR OWN
By TAN THIAM HOCK

IN the recent Chief Marketing Officer to Boardroom conference, I was asked whether marketing skills is a prerequisite for a successful entrepreneur.

Caught off guard, I mumbled some feeble answer, which did not seem to convince that smart alec. If only I had my wits with me that day, I would have asked him: “Do great marketeers make good entrepreneurs?”

I guess very highly successful entrepreneurs possess natural talents and all round skills. To me, talent is inborn and is reflected through each person's personality.

Natural leadership, likable personality, humility and being quick with numbers are certainly qualities that are endearing and nice to have. But will these qualities ensure success? Do nice guys really finish last?

Secret weapon
Very successful high profile entrepreneurs tend to have a ruthless streak framed around a very confident personality and have the gift of the gab. Think Donald Trump straight talking, unforgiving and totally domineering. Oppose him and you are fired! Maybe there are Malaysian “Trumps” in our midst. Can you identify them?

There are also highly successful tough Malaysian entrepreneurs but in true Asian culture, they hire ruthless henchmen to run their organisation while they stay in the background strategising. Can you identify them? No names from me lest I am prepared to face a RM100mil defamation lawsuit!

Thinking out of the box, I would like you to believe that politicians do make good entrepreneurs. They have an inborn talent of being totally aware of their surroundings, instantly compartmentalising internal and external forces into a SWOT analysis. Acknowledging their own strengths and weaknesses, they are able to size up threats and look for instant opportunities. And they hire ruthless henchmen too, to help them run a tight ship. Can you identify them?

The cash theory
Successful politicians are great strategists, charismatic leaders and possess an even slicker gift of the gab. They are also a natural when it comes to understanding numbers.

Small time politicians, small brain, small numbers but for big time politicians, the world is their oyster.
If you look closely enough, the bulge in their pocket actually contains a 15-digit computer calculator. How else do you think they can manage RM3bil cash in multiple bank accounts? From memory? No, that has been conveniently erased.

In another lecture on entrepreneurial wisdom, the first slide by Prof William Salman from HBS that flashed on the screen was four sentences on finance and what he learned after more than 30 years of teaching entrepreneurial finance and being consultant to more than 100 companies:

More cash is preferred to less cash
Cash sooner is preferred to cash later
Less risky cash is preferred to more risky cash
Don't run out of cash

In the current US presidential election campaign, President Barack Obama is raising concern that his opponent, Republican Mitt Romney, has raised substantially more election funds than his campaign has.

Obviously, in an intense campaign of this nature, more cash is preferred to less cash strategic advantage due to more firepower. Cash sooner is preferred to cash later demoralising the opposing team. Less risky cash is preferred to more risky cash Obama's advantage as he has to give less trade offs to the contributors who are legally lobbying for favours. Don't run out of cash advantage to Romney as

Obama will have to go into borrowings to match Romney's firepower, just like Bill Clinton who on his retirement had to hit the lecture circuit and publish memoirs just to pay off his borrowings.
So are politicians good entrepreneurs? I rest my case.

Yearn to learn
Not all entrepreneurs are gifted with all-round inborn talents. But there are certain qualities which are prerequisites if you want to be successful. You must have a burning desire to achieve.

You must be pragmatic and realistic in your personal SWOT analysis. Hopefully, you are slightly cleverer than your competitors.

Advantage to you if you are naturally good with numbers and you are able to exude a confident personality and strong leadership.

Most important of all, you must be willing to learn.

Running a business is a life long education journey. You can acquire the necessary skills like finance, marketing, law etc in the course of your work or attend courses and seminars. If you have a keen eye, learning from other people's mistakes will save you a lot of pain in your future endeavors.

Nowadays, you can hire a coach to guide you, image consultants to spruce you up and a psychiatrist to build your confidence. Add a good speech therapist and you now have the potential to become a successful businessman or a slick politician. The world is indeed your oyster.

It is encouraging to note that entrepreneurship as a subject is now part of tertiary education syllabus.
With the support of the enthusiastic Dr Vicki Little, the Entrepreneur Club in our local Monash University is buzzing and in high spirits.

35 years ago, we had careers clubs and interact clubs in our secondary schools because students then were clueless, naive and shy. Perhaps Dr Little can help set up a chain of entrepreneur clubs in our secondary schools across the nation. This could be the start of a sustainable ecosystem for entrepreneurship in Malaysia.

Lastly, to answer the smart alec, I do agree with him that it is definitely an advantage if the entrepreneur has good marketing skills. After all, the ultimate aim of any business is to sell products or services to customers.

Do spare a thought though for politicians, as they have the unenviable task of selling hope which requires a higher level of cash and imagination. Like entrepreneurs, they too invest for their future.

SO what will entrepreneur Derek Sivers speak on when he takes to the stage at TEDxKL next month? It is almost impossible to tell just by examining the videos of his past TEDTalks.

There are three such videos, each under three minutes long. These are entertaining and often witty lessons on disparate topics.

For example, at a TED event in Mysore, India, in November 2009, Sivers got the audience to think about how there is a flipside to everything.

It is all about perspective and keeping an open mind. What is weird practice to a person may be nothing more than a different way of looking at something.

“Let's never forget that whatever brilliant ideas you have or hear, that the opposite may also be true,” he urged.

In Long Beach, California, a few months later, Sivers cleverly used a video of young people dancing with abandon at an outdoor festival, to illustrate his points on how to start a movement.
His advice: “If you really care about starting a movement, have the courage to follow and show others how to follow. And when you find a lone nut doing something great, have the guts to be the first one to stand up and join in.”

The third video was taken at Oxford, England, in July 2010. In it, Sivers argued that a person had a better chance of achieving his goals if he kept them to himself instead of revealing them to others.
Clearly, Sivers is not sticking to an agenda. And he rejects any notion that he will be at TEDxKL as an entrepreneur with a key message to deliver.

“Oh, I've got no message at all. When I'm speaking at a TED event, I'm not an entrepreneur. I'm just a fellow student, sharing something I've learned about life,” he told StarBizWeek via email.

Sivers: ‘My main goal is to present something that challenges your existing beliefs, that makes you look at the world in a new way.’

Not that he is not qualified to offer insights into entrepreneurship. In 1998, he founded CD Baby, which became the largest seller of independent music online. A decade later, he sold the company for US$22mil and gave the proceeds to a charitable trust for music education.

He has since set up Now Now Now, a “holding company for open and honest services that help musicians”. Among the services he plans to roll out are MuckWork (it will have a network of people doing non-creative, mundane work for musicians) and SongTest (a free, open song contest).
“This isn't work, it's play,” he wrote on his website.

Even the TEDxKL theme of Interdependence is no indicator of what Sivers will present at the conference. He says: “No offence to the organisers, but I never pay much attention to the themes. To me, it's all about the attendees. That's the real reason to go to TED. Otherwise you could just watch the talks at home at your leisure.”

However, he is willing to let on this much about his talk in Kuala Lumpur expect to be surprised with something new.

“People come to TED to learn. If I don't surprise you, then everything I've said is aligned with what you already believe. My main goal is to present something that challenges your existing beliefs, that makes you look at the world in a new way,” he explains.

It helps that Sivers is an experienced performer. He was the ringleader/MC of a circus for 10 years, and is also a full-time musician. He has done over 1,000 shows as the main performer.

“The biggest lesson learned is that it's not about you, the performer. It's 100% all about the audience. For TED, it's about presenting a new and surprising idea for the audience. It doesn't matter who I am, what I've done, or anything else. All that matters is the idea.

“So it's my job to present it in the most memorable way I can so people can remember it long enough to talk about with their friends tomorrow,” he says.

An American born in California, Sivers now lives in Singapore with his wife. “There's so much going on in Asia, so exciting, so much to learn. I really wanted a home base in the middle of it all. And so we found Singapore,” he wrote on his website.

His fascination with Malaysia is a big reason for agreeing to be a TEDxKL presenter. He explains to StarBizWeek: “I want to understand it (Malaysia) more. I'd like to spend much more time here, but for now, TEDxKL can be a little sample of the best and the brightest a taste of the culture.”
Of course, being part of the TED experience is a factor as well. “You're surrounded by smart and successful people. It's inspiring to try to live up to that. It makes you look at your work or life from their perspective,” he says.

Now in its fourth year, TEDxKL is an independently organised event under the TED banner. TED describes itself as a non-profit organisation “devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading”. It started in 1984 as a conference on technology, entertainment and design (TED), but the scope has been expanded to also include science, business, the arts and global issues.

TEDxKL (www.tedxkl.com) will be held on July 14 at the Temple of Fine Arts in Brickfields, Kuala Lumpur. The Star is an official media partner of the event.

Among the other presenters at TEDxKL are entrepreneur Myshkin Ingawale, nanotechnology expert Dr Ille Gebershuber, writer-actor-director Jo Kukathas, photographer Zann Huang, sun bear conservationist Wong Siew Te, Sinar Project co-founder Khairil Yusof and comedian Kavin Jayaram.

SINGAPORE, June 28 (Bernama) -- JTC Corporation's Surface Engineering Hub, launched Thursday by the Minister for Trade and Industry Lim Hng Kiang, will be completed by the first half of 2013.

It will provide shared facilities, such as a centralised waste treatment plant, which aims to reduce the initial set-up costs and recurring operational costs.

To date, 13 companies, mostly small and medium enterprises, have already shown interest to take up about 40 per cent of the space in the hub.

Ikhlas mahu jawatankuasa khas tangani isu peniaga asing

- Bernama
