The chief minister signed a plaque during the officiation, followed by a tour of the area with Mydin business director Datuk Wira Dr Ameer Ali.

"It is hoped that this new outlet may serve as a catalyst in this region for Malacca's overall economic development," Ali Rustam said in his speech. The Mydin hypermarket in Jasin is the second to be opened in Malacca after the MITC Mydin in Ayer Keroh, which was opened in April 2009. It is also the fourth Mydin outlet in the state and the 101th nationwide.

The RM60 million outlet, which has an area of 198,000 feet square, is strategically located for residents of Jasin, Tangkak, Segamat and Muar.

Saturday's ceremony also featured a community event for 7,000 locals, which is part of Mydin's Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme. Among the events held were fireworks, a lucky draw, a local talent contest, cultural shows and quizzes, followed by lunch courtesy of Mydin and the Jasin Municipal Council.

Visitors were also treated to seeing a Manchester United-edition Chevrolet for the two-day opening, which is the first-ever in the world.

This event was courtesy of Mamee's promotion, in which customers stand a chance to win a brand new Chevrolet of their own through Mister Potato's nationwide "Snack and Win" competition from Feb 4 to April 28.

For the hypermarket's opening sale, featuring 15 sales bazaars, a wide variety of products are on offer including electrical items, health and beauty products, sports products, clothes, stationary, as well as Kedai 1Malaysia goods.

The new outlet will provide up to 300 job opportunities, as it houses 39 business units for local Small Medium Industry (SMI) entrepreneurs to trade in.

Other facilities include the Rasa Village food court, Wi-Fi internet service, baby changing rooms, disabled facilities, prayer rooms, ATM machines and free parking.
