KUALA LUMPUR: Small and medium enterprises (SME) are urged to register their business online by having a website to gain more
business exposure and explore more opportunities.

In making the call, Senior Director, Exporters' Development Division of the Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (Matrade), Datuk Dzulkifli Mahmud said having a website would put Malaysian companies on the radar of the globally booming e-commerce business world.

Currently, there are about 700,000 SMEs in the country and only 100,000 of them are registered online with a website, he said.

"Having a website puts Malaysian SMEs on the Internet and it will help people to find you. Anyone around the world can see what the companies are offering and this enables them to reach a multitude of potential customers.

"Last year, the number of registered Internet users in Malaysia totalled 17.5 million and I believe this number will increase as the expansion is supported by technical innovations that have changed the seller-buyer relationship," he told reporters after opening a workshop on "Get Malaysian Business Online," organised by Matrade.

Dzulkifli said Malaysian SMEs should not overlook the huge potential of the online market segment since there were vast opportunities for the e-commerce industry in Malaysia.

He said JP Morgan has estimated that the global e-commerce revenue would hit US$963 billion this year.

"This positive outlook is timely relevant to Malaysian companies, especially SMEs, because it provides an opportunity for them to expand their business markets to another level and increase sales," he said.

Dzulkifli also said Matrade expects a 15 per cent increase in the number of SMEs registered online by year-end from the current 100,000 entities.

Better network and Internet penetration, cheaper technology gadgets and higher literacy level among businessmen will drive the target," he added. -- BERNAMA
