KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia External Trade Development Corp (Matrade) has urged small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to put their businesses online to have more exposure and sales abroad.
Matrade senior director of exporters development division Datuk Dzulkifli Mahmud said having a website will place them on the radar of the thriving e-commerce world.
According to JP Morgan, the global e-commerce revenue will hit US$963 billion (RM3 trillion) by the end of this year.
"Malaysian SMEs can reach a multitude of potential customers worldwide just by setting up a website. Having a website puts Malaysian SMEs on the Internet and it will help people to find you," Dzulkifli said.
He said Matrade expects a 15 per cent increase in the number of SMEs registered online by year end.
Dzulkifli said the target is achievable because of a better network and Internet penetration rate.
"The positive outlook (by JP Morgan) is good for Malaysian SMEs because it provides an opportunity for them to expand their business to another level and increase sales," he said after launching a workshop on "Get Malaysian Business Online" yesterday.
In his speech earlier, Dzulkifli said Malaysian SMEs should not overlook the potential online market can offer.
"In 2011, the number of registered Internet users in Malaysia amounted to 17.5 million people and I believe this number will increase as this expansion is supported by technical innovation that has changed the seller and buyer relationship," he added.
